Lake Hammar is a large shallow lake and marsh complex in southern Iraq’s Dhi Qar Governorate, forming part of the Mesopotamian Marshes. It is characterised by broad reedbeds and shallow open water rather than deep open-lake basins.
The area is important for birdlife and supports traditional reed- and fish-based livelihoods for local communities. The site is also notable for wetland vegetation and seasonal changes in extent rather than recreational tourism infrastructure.
In the late 20th century much of the Mesopotamian Marshes, including areas around Lake Hammar, were subject to large-scale drainage; efforts to restore marshes began in the early 21st century and have led to partial recovery of wetland areas and wildlife.
