Main image

Lake Guatavita is a small, roughly circular lake in the Cundinamarca highlands of Colombia associated with the Muisca peoples and the El Dorado legend. The lake’s cultural importance stems from indigenous rituals in which offerings of gold and other objects were cast into the water.

Visitors typically use designated viewpoints and short paths to view the lake rather than access the shore; the site is interpreted for its archaeological and ethnographic significance. Related gold artifacts recovered from the region now appear in museums and collections in Colombia.

From the 16th century onwards Spanish colonial interest focused on the lake because of reports of ritual gold offerings; the basin has been subject to archaeological and limited recovery attempts at various times. The lake and its immediate surroundings are treated as an archaeological and cultural heritage area.

The lake sits in the high plateau of Cundinamarca Department, within the uplands northeast of Bogotá and near small local municipalities that function as access points for visitors.

  • Cultural significance: Associated with the Muisca El Dorado ritual in pre-Columbian lore, and subject to historic colonial recovery attempts to retrieve offerings from the basin.
