Lake Fúquene
Lake Highland Colombian lake, important Ramsar wetland
A high‑altitude lake on the Bogotá plateau in Cundinamarca, long used for local fisheries and reeds. Ornithologists and nearby communities observe its wetland birdlife and shrinking shoreline.
Lake Fúquene is a high Andean lake in the Cundinamarca Department of Colombia, north of Bogotá, and is an important wetland in the region. It has served as a habitat for numerous waterbirds and as a resource for local agriculture.
The lake and its remaining marshes attract birdwatchers and researchers interested in Andean wetland ecosystems; the shoreline supports reedbeds and aquatic vegetation. Recreational use is limited compared with its ecological role and local agricultural uses.
Throughout the 20th century the lake’s area was reduced by drainage, agricultural reclamation and peat extraction, altering hydrology and wetland extent. Conservation measures and local management aim to protect remaining wetland habitat and species.
Geographically the lake sits on the high plateau of the Eastern Cordillera in Cundinamarca, within the Andean highlands north of Colombia’s capital region.
- Ecological importance: Important for waterbird habitat and wetland biodiversity despite having suffered major shrinkage from mid-20th-century drainage and land use change.
