Lake Elton

Lake Elton is a large saline lake in Volgograd Oblast in southwestern Russia, situated on the Caspian Depression near the Kazakh border. It is known for its high salinity, salt pans and long-standing salt extraction and therapeutic mud traditions.

The shoreline features industrial saltworks and facilities associated with processing and harvesting salt, alongside spa and sanatorium operations that use the lake’s mineral-rich mud for therapeutic treatments. The surrounding steppe supports seasonal waterbird populations attracted to the lake.

Salt extraction from the lake has been practiced for centuries and grew into formalised industrial operations in the 19th and 20th centuries; the lake’s mineral resources have driven local settlement and economic activity.

Lake Elton sits in the flat expanses of the Caspian Depression in Volgograd Oblast, a remote steppe region with roads connecting to regional centres and to the nearby Kazakh frontier.
