Lake Edward is a rift lake on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, forming part of the western branch of the East African Rift system. It is a freshwater lake of regional ecological importance and supports significant wildlife populations.

The lake’s shoreline and connecting channels are notable for hippo and crocodile populations and abundant birdlife, and the area supports fishing and park-based tourism. It links to nearby water bodies via a navigable channel that is used for boat trips and wildlife viewing.

Named during 19th-century European exploration, the lake has long formed part of local ecosystems and human economies through fishing and transport; it is also central to adjacent protected areas that conserve the surrounding savanna and montane habitats.

Geographically the lake lies on the border of eastern DRC and western Uganda within the Albertine Rift, adjacent to national parks on both sides and approximately several hundred kilometres west of the Rift Valley escarpments to the east.

  • Border and ecology: The lake straddles the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda and lies within the Albertine Rift, an area of high biodiversity.
  • Protected areas: The lake is part of adjacent protected areas on both sides, including prominent national parks that use the shoreline and channels for wildlife viewing and tourism.
