Lake Dukan
Lake Reservoir in Iraqi Kurdistan created by Dukan Dam
A reservoir behind the Dukan Dam in Iraqi Kurdistan, Lake Dukan provides fishing, shoreline picnics and boat trips, with Kurdish towns and agricultural plains on its margins.
Lake Dukan is a reservoir in Sulaymaniyah Governorate in northeastern Iraq, formed by damming the Lesser Zab (Little Zab) River. The lake is the impoundment behind Dukan Dam and functions as a storage reservoir.
The reservoir supports irrigation and water management in the surrounding agricultural region and has shoreline settlements and local uses including fishing. It is an engineered waterbody rather than a natural lake.
The lake originated when the Dukan Dam was built and the valley upstream was flooded to form the reservoir; the dam and reservoir have been central to regional water management since construction. Over time the reservoir has affected local settlement patterns and agriculture upstream and downstream.
Lake Dukan lies in northeastern Iraq within Sulaymaniyah Governorate, occupying a valley on the Lesser Zab River and serving as a regional water resource.
