Lake Débo
Lake Seasonal inner delta lake on the Niger River
A seasonal lake in Mali’s Inner Niger Delta, Lake Débo swells with the annual flood; visitors travel by pirogue for fishing, birdlife and riverine markets during the high water season.
Lake Débo is a seasonal lake in central Mali within the Mopti Region and forms part of the Inner Niger Delta. Its surface area and depth vary dramatically with the annual flood cycle of the Niger River.
The lake is an important seasonal fishing ground and plays a role in local transportation and grazing during the wet season. Communities in the delta rely on the seasonal inundation for fisheries, agriculture and navigation.
Lake Débo exists because the Niger River spreads into the inner delta floodplain each year, creating an expanse of shallow water and wetlands that expands during the rainy season and shrinks in the dry season. Its character and ecology are defined by this annual flooding regime.
Geographically the lake is in central Mali’s Mopti Region, within the floodplain of the Niger River known as the Inner Niger Delta, and is served by river channels connecting it to other delta lakes and to downstream stretches of the Niger.
