Lake Copais

Lake Copais (Kopais) was a large inland lake in Boeotia in central Greece that dominated the regional plain in antiquity but was drained in the modern era to create farmland. The basin is archaeologically important because settlements and hydraulic works from the Bronze Age and classical periods sit on the former shoreline.

Today the former lakebed is intensively farmed and contains visible remains of ancient settlements such as Orchomenus, together with traces of large-scale ancient drainage works. Interest in the area is chiefly archaeological and agrarian rather than recreational lake use.

In antiquity the lake formed a key element of Boeotian geography and economy, and successive cultures adapted its shores for settlement and farming. Modern drainage projects in the late 19th century transformed the landscape into productive plain and ended the basin’s existence as an open lake.

The former lake basin lies in central Greece’s Boeotia region, inland from the Gulf of Corinth and near towns that grew around the agricultural plain.

• Drained basin: The basin was deliberately drained in the late 19th century to convert marshes to agricultural land, so the ancient lake no longer exists as it did in antiquity.

What to See #

• Orchomenus ruins: The site of the ancient city of Orchomenus (Orchomenos) lies on the former lake shore and contains remains from the Mycenaean and classical periods that reflect the area's long habitation.
• Kopais plain: The drained Kopais plain is the reclaimed agricultural land that occupies the former lake basin and preserves traces of ancient drainage and canal works.
