Lake Çıldır Lake

Lake Çıldır is a high-altitude freshwater lake in Ardahan Province in northeastern Turkey. It is a prominent lake in the region known for extensive winter ice cover and rural lakeside communities.

The lake is used locally for fishing and seasonal transport and is notable for its frozen surface in winter, when residents travel on the ice and traditional winter activities take place. Recreational visitors come for winter scenes and simple lakeside walks in summer.

Çıldır is a natural plateau lake formed in the region’s uplands and has long been part of local pastoral and fishing economies. There are no large-scale urban developments on its shores.

Geographically it lies in Turkey’s far northeast, in Ardahan Province close to the border with Georgia, set within a plateau and mountain landscape.

Lake Çıldır (Ardahan Province) is reached by road. The lake sits beside the village of Akyaka (Ardahan) and is served by local minibuses (dolmuş) and private cars from the towns of Ardahan and Kars; follow regional roads toward Akyaka and the lakeshore. From Akyaka the shoreline, guesthouses and frozen-ice tracks in winter are a short walk from the village center.

• Visit in winter (December-March) if you want the iconic experience of a frozen Çıldır-local fishermen and sleigh rides operate on the ice-whereas summer offers quieter lakeside views and birdlife; choose timing based on the activity you want.
• Approach from the town of Çıldır or Ardahan, which are the main service points for the lake; most visitor facilities and parking are on the southern shore near Çıldır village, so plan your route to that side.
• To avoid the small surge of weekend visitors, go early on weekday mornings; talk to local fishermen or guesthouses for authentic ice‑fishing experiences and chauffeured sleighs that many day‑trippers miss.
