Lake Chūzenji is a high-altitude lake in Nikko National Park, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, located on the flanks of Mount Nantai. It is notable for its mountain setting and seasonal displays of autumn colour.

The lake offers passenger boat cruises, shoreline promenades and viewpoints, and is closely associated with one of Japan’s better-known waterfalls formed at its outlet. Peak visitor activity is in autumn for foliage and in summer for day trips from the Nikko area.

The lake was created when past volcanic activity from Mount Nantai blocked a mountain valley, damming streams and forming the present basin thousands of years ago. Over time the area developed as a religious and recreational landscape tied to nearby Nikko shrines and temples.

Lake Chūzenji sits in the mountains north of the city of Nikko within central Honshu, surrounded by forested slopes and mountain roads that connect it to the Nikko town centre and national-park facilities.

  • Elevation: Sits at approximately 1,269 metres above sea level, making it one of the more accessible high-mountain lakes in Honshu.
  • Waterfall height: The main outlet forms a waterfall roughly 97 metres tall, which is one of the lake's best-known viewpoints.

What to See #

  • Kegon Falls: Waterfall fed by the lake's outlet, with a drop of about 97 metres and a major scenic attraction on the lake's downstream side.
  • Chuzenji lakeshore: High-altitude lakeshore area that supports boat services, lakeside walks and viewpoints popular in autumn peak-colour season.

How to Get to Lake Chūzenji #

From Tobu-Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station take a Tobu Bus or Nikko City Bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen / Lake Chūzenji (routes that climb the Irohazaka road); the bus trip is about 40-60 minutes. By car the lake is reached from central Nikko via the Irohazaka winding road-around 20 km and typically a 30-45 minute drive depending on traffic; the main bus stops and parking are a short 5-10 minute walk from the lakeshore.

Tips for Visiting Lake Chūzenji #

  • Use public buses from Tobu-Nikko or the Nikko area to reach Lake Chūzenji and plan to arrive early - many organized tour buses hit the lake mid-morning, so early arrival gives calmer views and quieter trails.
  • Visit the Kegon Falls viewpoint before the busiest hours (it's immediately downstream of the lake) and consider taking one of the sightseeing boats on Lake Chūzenji for a different perspective of the lakeshore and surrounding mountains.
  • If you're after autumn color, mid-October is typically the peak window in the Nikko area; expect large crowds on weekends and plan weekday visits where possible.
