Lake Chelan is a long, glacier-carved lake in north-central Washington State that extends roughly 50.5 miles (about 81 kilometers) from the town of Chelan to the remote community of Stehekin. It is notable for its fjord-like deep basin and its large maximum depth of about 1,486 feet (453 meters).
The lake supports boating, fishing, hiking and waterside recreation; ferry and water-taxi services provide scheduled transport along the lake to settlements and trailheads. The upper basin includes federally managed public land and a national recreation area that is popular with hikers and campers.
Lake Chelan formed by glacial scouring during the last ice age and has long been used for transportation and recreation. Management is a mix of federal, state and local jurisdictions that support visitor services and wilderness access.
Located in Chelan County, the lake sits in a steep glacial valley running into the Cascade Range, with the town of Chelan at the lakeshore outlet and Stehekin at the lake’s head.

How to Get to Lake Chelan #
Lake Chelan’s southern terminus is the town of Chelan. By car, from the larger regional hub Wenatchee drive north on US‑97 then follow State Route 150 west into Chelan (roughly 40-50 minutes by road from Wenatchee). From Seattle the drive is typically about 3.5-4 hours by highway (various routes via I‑90/US‑2 and US‑97 depending on chosen route). Chelan Marina in the town is within a few hundred metres’ walk of the town centre and is the boarding point for the lake’s passenger boats and the ferry to Stehekin.
Tips for Visiting Lake Chelan #
- Take the early-morning ferry/boat service from the town of Chelan to beat crowds and enjoy glassy water; Stehekin at the north end is boat- or plane‑access only, so reserve passage in advance during summer.
- Base yourself in the town of Chelan (southern end) for the main public access, state park beach areas, and parking; avoid peak mid‑day summer weekends if you want fewer people.
- If you plan to hike or bike into the North Cascades from the lake (trails out of Stehekin), start early or plan an overnight - many trailheads and longer routes are only reachable from the northern end.
