Lake Charvak is an artificial reservoir in Tashkent Region, Uzbekistan, formed on the Chirchiq River. It was created by the construction of the Charvak Dam and serves multiple purposes including water storage and recreation.

The reservoir has long, irregular shorelines with beaches, picnic areas and resort settlements on its banks that attract local visitors for swimming, boating and leisure. It is one of the main recreational water bodies in the greater Tashkent area.

The lake was created when the Charvak Dam was built on the Chirchiq River; the dam and reservoir were developed to provide irrigation water, flood control and hydroelectric power. Over time shoreline settlements and visitor facilities have grown around the reservoir.

Lake Charvak sits within Tashkent Region in eastern Uzbekistan on the upper reaches of the Chirchiq River. It is within driving distance of the city of Tashkent and occupies a valley cut by the river and upstream tributaries.

How to Get to Lake Charvak #

Lake Charvak (Chorvoq Reservoir) is a popular day-trip reservoir northeast of Tashkent. It is roughly 70-90 km from central Tashkent and by car typically takes around 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic, using the main roads out of the city toward the mountains. Shared minibuses (marshrutkas) and private taxis also run from Tashkent to Charvak/Chorvoq and stop near the dam and recreation areas; from parking or drop-off points the main viewpoints and beaches are a short walk.

Tips for Visiting Lake Charvak #

  • Go on a weekday or early in the morning to avoid heavy weekend crowds from Tashkent and get calmer water for photos and boat trips.
  • Approach via the dam area on the Chirchiq/Charvak access road and use the developed northern shore for cafes, boat hire and swimming spots; cash is often needed at lakeside stalls.
  • Take the short climbs above the lake (toward Beldersay/Bogʻiston viewpoints) for panoramic overlooks-many visitors stay at water level and miss the higher-angle views and sunsets.
