Lake Chany
Lake Large inland lake in Siberia with fluctuating levels
In southwestern Siberia, Lake Chany is a large shallow lake important for migratory birds; naturalists, fishermen and regional travelers visit for birdwatching and steppe-water landscapes.
Lake Chany is a large, shallow lake in Novosibirsk Oblast in southwestern Siberia, Russia, and is one of the major inland lakes of the West Siberian Plain.
The lake is shallow and subject to seasonal and longer-term fluctuations in water level and extent, which strongly affect local shoreline habitats. Its marshes and reedbeds provide important habitat for migratory and breeding waterbirds.
Lake Chany is a natural endorheic basin and its ecology is influenced by inflows from surrounding rivers and steppe drainage. Human activity in the surrounding agricultural plain affects water balance and local land use.
The lake lies within Novosibirsk Oblast on the West Siberian Plain, in a broad agricultural and wetland landscape.
- Regional importance: One of the largest lakes in Western Siberia and an important stopover for migratory waterbirds.
How to Get to Lake Chany #
From Novosibirsk (city center), drive roughly 250-300 km southwest: take the R254 (Novosibirsk-Barnaul) for the bulk of the route, then local roads toward the villages of Chany or Mikhailovka depending on which shore is the destination. Expect unpaved stretches-4x4 recommended in wet months. There is no regular long-distance bus directly to the lakeshore; regional minibuses (marshrutkas) run to nearby district towns (e.g., Bagansky District) from where local transport or hired taxis complete the journey.
Tips for Visiting Lake Chany #
- Hire a local birding guide near the village of Chany for the best chance to see raptors and rare shorebirds during spring and autumn migration.
- Visit the shallow reed fringes at dawn-mammal tracks and unusual shorebird roosts are easiest to spot then.
- Roads to different shores are seasonal; check local weather and ask at villages for which tracks are passable-4x4 recommended in wet months.
- Respect protected areas: parts of the lake are important for breeding waterfowl and have seasonal closures.
Best Time to Visit Lake Chany #
Best visited in late spring through early autumn for birding and accessible roads.
