Lake Büyükçekmece
Reservoir Istanbul's large coastal lagoon west of the city
West of Istanbul, Büyükçekmece Lake forms a coastal lagoon and reservoir. Lakeside promenades, cafés and fishing piers draw weekend visitors; the area is also used for birdwatching and suburban recreation.
Lake Büyükçekmece is a lagoon-like lake on the European side of Istanbul, adjacent to the district of Büyükçekmece. It lies behind a narrow coastal barrier separating it from the Sea of Marmara.
The shoreline includes parks, promenades and local beaches and is used for boating, fishing and urban recreation rather than as a remote natural reserve. The lake and adjacent district are part of Istanbul’s suburban and coastal fabric.
The lake basin and its mouth have been modified over time for water management, transport and urban development, particularly during the 20th century as Istanbul expanded westward. These works have shaped salinity and flow between the lake and the sea.
Lake Büyükçekmece sits on the western outskirts of greater Istanbul, on the European shore of the Sea of Marmara, adjacent to the suburban district of the same name and within Istanbul Province.
- Coastal lagoon and urban link: Forms a lagoon-like basin on Istanbul's European side separated from the Sea of Marmara by a narrow coastal barrier. The adjacent district and shoreline are urbanized.
- Urban recreation: Accessible from the city of Istanbul and used for local recreation, shoreline promenades and fisheries rather than long-distance tourism.
