How to Get to Lake Bolsena #
Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio is reachable by car and public transport from Rome. By road it’s about 90-110 km north of Rome (roughly 1.5-2 hours depending on route and traffic) - drivers typically use the A1 motorway to Orte and then regional roads toward Bolsena. By rail, take trains toward Orte or Orvieto and then local buses or taxis to towns on the lake shore (services connect Orvieto/Orte/Viterbo with Bolsena and nearby villages).
Tips for Visiting Lake Bolsena #
- Visit at first light for calm water and quieter lakeside towns-Bolsena, Capodimonte and Marta are peaceful in the morning and are good bases for boat trips.
- Check seasonal boat schedules in advance if you want to visit Isola Bisentina; small passenger boats run from Bolsena and Capodimonte but timetables change and services are limited outside summer.
- Use the less crowded towns (Capodimonte or Marta) to access quieter shore walks and boat landings; make time for a boat trip to Isola Bisentina to see its archaeological ruins and medieval remains with a local skipper or guided tour.
