Lake Ağgöl
Lake Karstic saline lake and important bird habitat
A shallow lake in Aghjabadi District within the Kur‑Araz lowland. Birdwatchers visit for wetland species and seasonal waterfowl.
Lake Ağgöl is a shallow lake in the Kura-Araz lowland located in Aghjabadi District of central Azerbaijan and forms part of the region’s wetland system. It is an important habitat for waterbirds and other wetland species.
Extensive reedbeds and shallow shallows make the site attractive for birdwatching, particularly during the spring and autumn migration periods when migrating waterfowl and waders use the lake as a stopover. The surrounding landscape is largely lowland steppe and agricultural mosaic.
The lake and adjacent wetlands have been recognised locally for their ecological value and are subject to conservation and management measures aimed at protecting bird habitat. Human-induced hydrological changes in the wider Kura-Araz plain have influenced water levels and ecology over time.
Geographically the lake lies in the central lowlands between the Kura and Araz river systems, within Aghjabadi District. The setting is flat agricultural lowland rather than mountainous terrain.
- Bird migration: Spring and autumn migrations concentrate waterfowl and other migratory birds, making these seasons the best time for birdwatching.
