Lainzer Tiergarten

Lainzer Tiergarten is a large city-owned wildlife reserve and park on the western edge of Vienna, within the Wienerwald (Vienna Woods). It was formerly an imperial hunting ground and today is managed as a protected urban forest and recreation area.

An extensive network of trails and wide forest paths crosses roughly 2,400-2,500 hectares of mixed woodland; walkers commonly encounter red deer, fallow deer and wild boar. The park contains the Hermesvilla, a late 19th-century villa turned exhibition site, and several gates that serve as entry points and trailheads.

Observation points and clearings provide views over Vienna and the surrounding woods, and the reserve is used for day hikes, nature photography and seasonal wildlife observation. The park is accessible by public transport from Vienna and is a frequent destination for city residents seeking woodland recreation.

Created from lands long held by the Habsburg monarchy as an enclosed hunting ground, the area gradually transitioned to public and municipal management in the 20th century and has been preserved as a nature and recreation reserve. The Hermesvilla was built for Emperor Franz Joseph and forms a cultural landmark within the woods.

The reserve sits on Vienna’s western outskirts within the Wienerwald and is administered by the city; several formal gates provide pedestrian access from neighboring districts and suburbs.
