Laguna Colorada
Lake Shallow red lake in Andean altiplano with flamingos
In Bolivia’s southwest altiplano, Laguna Colorada is a shallow red lake in Eduardo Avaroa Reserve, ringed by borax islands and frequented by Andean flamingos and salt‑tolerant algae.
Laguna Colorada is a shallow, salt lake in the high Andean plateau of southwest Bolivia, within the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve. The lake is notable for its red coloration caused by algae and suspended sediments and for hosting flamingo feeding grounds.
Shallow by depth but extensive in area, the lagoon contains borax islands and mineral crusts that add to its distinctive appearance. Large numbers of James’s, Andean and Chilean flamingos visit the lake to feed on the algae and plankton that thrive in its mineral-rich waters.
The basin is an endorheic high-altitude lake shaped by the Andean plateau’s hydrology and saline deposits. Seasonal changes in water level and chemistry influence the intensity of the lake’s color and the distribution of bird life.
Laguna Colorada lies in Potosí Department in southwestern Bolivia, in the Altiplano near the border with Chile, and is commonly visited as part of overland tours from Uyuni and other regional gateways.
- Altitude: Sits at high elevation, around 4,278 metres, which means cold, thin-air conditions and strong ultraviolet radiation for visitors.
- Wildlife and colour: Noted for seasonal populations of three flamingo species that feed in the shallow, mineral-rich waters and for its intense red coloration caused by algae and sediments.
How to Get to Laguna Colorada #
Laguna Colorada is in the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve (Potosí Department, southwestern Bolivia) and is not served by regular public transport. The usual approach is by organised 4x4 tours departing from Uyuni (Bolivia) or as part of cross‑border tours from San Pedro de Atacama (Chile). From Uyuni these are multi‑day trips on unpaved high‑altitude roads covering a few hundred kilometres; expect long off‑road driving and that access requires a high‑clearance 4x4 and an organised tour. Walking around the lagoon itself is a short distance from the viewing/parking area.
Tips for Visiting Laguna Colorada #
- Plan to be at Laguna Colorada around sunrise or late afternoon when the low sun intensifies the lake's red-brown hues and flamingos are most active - mid-day light tends to flatten colors.
- Laguna Colorada lies inside the Eduardo Avaroa Reserve and is normally visited as part of a licensed multi-day 4x4 tour from Uyuni; secure a reputable operator who provides park entrance permits and understands high‑altitude logistics.
- Acclimatize at lower altitude (Uyuni or Potosí) before attempting the reserve visit and expect rapidly changing weather - keep your time at the lake flexible so you can pick the clearest window for photos and wildlife viewing.
