Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a US Fish and Wildlife Service refuge on the lower Gulf Coast of Texas near the Rio Grande delta. It protects coastal wetlands, brushland and tidal habitats significant for migratory birds and Gulf Coast wildlife.

The refuge contains trails, observation areas and managed habitats that support large numbers of waterfowl, shorebirds and resident species used by birdwatchers and naturalists. Conservation programs on the refuge focus on habitat protection for migratory birds and regionally rare species.

The refuge was established to protect coastal wetland habitat and provide a stopover and wintering area for migratory birds along the Gulf Coast. Management combines habitat restoration, public wildlife observation and species conservation priorities.

Laguna Atascosa sits in southernmost Texas, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley near the coastal city of Brownsville; its location places it within a subtropical coastal landscape of marshes and thorn scrub.
