Lagodekhi Protected Areas
National Park Biosphere reserve in Kakheti preserving Caucasus biodiversity
On Kakheti’s northern slopes, Lagodekhi Protected Areas offer old-growth forests, alpine meadows, waterfalls and marked hiking trails. Visitors come for multi-day treks, birdwatching and mountain scenery in the Greater Caucasus foothills.
Lagodekhi Protected Areas are a network of protected lands in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, centred around the town of Lagodekhi. The unit conserves a range of Caucasus mountain ecosystems from mixed forest to alpine meadows and is one of the oldest protected sites in the region.
Marked hiking trails run through mature broadleaf and coniferous forests and lead to highland meadows and mountain viewpoints, offering opportunities for birdwatching and mammal observation. The area includes a visitor information centre and maintained paths of varying difficulty suitable for day hikes.
A core area was placed under formal protection in the early 20th century and the protected area configuration has been expanded since then to include surrounding national-park and managed zones. Management aims to balance strict conservation in the reserve core with public access and nature tourism in adjacent sections.
The protected areas lie in far-eastern Georgia in Kakheti, close to the country’s border with Azerbaijan and on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus range, with the town of Lagodekhi serving as the nearest settlement and access point.
- Historic protection status: One of the earliest formally protected sites in the Caucasus region, with protection originating in the early 20th century.
- Visitor facilities: Good trail infrastructure and a visitor centre in the park make it accessible for day hikes and wildlife observation, including brown bear and other Caucasus fauna.
What to See #
- Lagodekhi Strict Nature Reserve: Contains a strict nature reserve core that preserves old-growth broadleaf and conifer forest and limits public access to protect sensitive habitats.
- Lagodekhi National Park: A surrounding national park and managed areas provide marked trails, picnic sites and a visitor centre for education and recreation.
