Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake on São Miguel Island in the Azores, occupying the caldera of a volcano and designated as a protected natural area. It is one of the island’s larger freshwater bodies and lies within a conservation reserve because of its geological and ecological value.
Trails approach the lake from several directions and the area is used for hiking and nature observation; viewpoints on the caldera rim provide panoramic views of the lake and surrounding slopes. The shoreline and basin remain largely undeveloped, with emphasis on habitat protection and low-impact visitor access.
The lake sits within a volcanic crater formed by past eruptions of the central volcano on São Miguel; the area is managed for conservation and scientific study as well as public enjoyment. Vegetation around the crater includes native species adapted to the island’s Atlantic climate.
Geographically the lake is in the central part of São Miguel Island, surrounded by steep crater walls and upland slopes; the nearest urban centre is Ponta Delgada on the island’s southwest coast, with access to the reserve by island roads and walking tracks.
