Lago Fagnano

Lake Large glacial lake on Tierra del Fuego

Lago Fagnano stretches across Tierra del Fuego as a long glacial basin with windswept shores; visitors take boat trips, fish and hike through southern beech forest along the lake.

Main image

Lago Fagnano is a long glacial lake on the main island of Tierra del Fuego that extends in an east-west alignment across the island. The lake occupies a tectonically controlled, glacially carved valley and is one of the largest lakes in the region.

The water body is used locally for fishing and recreation; the landscape around the shores includes peat bogs, subantarctic forest and rolling low mountains. Roads and small settlements, most notably Tolhuin on the Argentine shore, provide the main access points for visitors and services.

Geologically the lake lies along a major fault zone and was formed by glacial erosion and subsequent basin infill during and after the last Ice Age. Human use has been primarily rural and recreational rather than urban or industrial.

Lago Fagnano sits on the island of Tierra del Fuego, spanning parts of Argentina and extending toward the island’s western interior, with Tolhuin as the principal nearby town on the Argentine side.

  • Length and setting: The lake stretches roughly 100 kilometres east-west across the main island of Tierra del Fuego and is set in a glacially carved valley framed by low mountains and peatland.

What to See #

  • Tolhuin (access point): The town of Tolhuin sits on the eastern shore and serves as the main local service and entry point for visitors to the lake's Argentine side.
  • Boat access and campsites: Shoreline campsites and boat launch points provide access for recreational fishing and lake travel along the lake's long east-west axis.
