Lago d'Orta
Lake Scenic Piedmont lake with island and medieval town
Lago d’Orta in Piedmont offers a compact lake setting with Orta San Giulio town, ferry access to Isola San Giulio, narrow lanes, lakeside cafés and gentle walking routes.
Lago d’Orta (Lake Orta) is a small subalpine lake in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, known for its compact size and picturesque lakeside towns. The lake is less developed than nearby major lakes and is valued for a quieter atmosphere.
A principal highlight is the small island in the lake that hosts a church and monastic complex; short boat trips from the lakeside town bring visitors to the island. The lakeside town on the eastern shore has narrow medieval streets, cafés and artisan shops and serves as the main visitor centre.
The lake’s shores have been occupied for centuries and the settlement pattern around the water reflects medieval and later development, with historic churches and small-scale tourism infrastructure. Modern use is centered on day tourism, local hospitality and short boat services.
Lago d’Orta lies west of Lake Maggiore in Piedmont and is reached from regional centres by road and local rail; the lakeside town on the eastern shore is the usual arrival point for visitors.
- Access and layout: The island and the lakeside town are compact and walkable; the town's waterfront provides the main ferry and boat access to the island.
- Character: The lake is smaller and quieter than neighbouring big lakes in the region, making it popular for day trips and a calmer alternative to more developed lake destinations.
What to See #
- San Giulio Island: A small island with a church and monastic buildings occupying a central position on the lake; the island is reached by boat from the lakeside town and is a focal point for visitors.
- Orta San Giulio town: A historic lakeside town with narrow streets, cafés and a medieval centre that serves as the main base for visitors to the lake and the island.

Tips for Visiting Lago d'Orta #
- Arrive in Orta San Giulio early in the morning to enjoy the lakeside piazza before day-trippers arrive; from the town you can catch the short frequent ferry to Isola San Giulio rather than trying to reach the island by private boat.
- Access Sacro Monte di Orta from the town and follow the uphill devotional path for panoramic views over Lago d'Orta-the site is a UNESCO complex and much quieter later in the afternoon when coach groups leave.
- Park at the edge of Orta San Giulio's pedestrian centre (there are municipal lots) and stroll into the historic centre rather than trying to drive into the narrow streets; this avoids the limited parking inside the village.
