Main image

Lagarfljót (often called Lögurinn) is a long, narrow freshwater body in East Iceland sitting in the valley of the Lagarfljót river. It is a prominent landscape feature of the East Fjords region and a focus for nearby outdoor recreation.

Shoreline highlights include forested areas and viewpoints that look down the length of the lake, and local hiking routes that visit nearby waterfalls and woodland. The lake is also known in Iceland for the folkloric creature the Lagarfljótsormurinn, a lake monster said to live in its depths.

The lake and valley formed through glacial and fluvial processes; settlements and farms developed along its shores and the area has long been used for fishing and timber from adjacent woods. Modern tourism centres on walking, birdwatching and exploring the nearby waterfalls and forests.

Lagarfljót sits in East Iceland near the service town of Egilsstaðir and stretches along the lowland valley before the river continues to the coast. The surrounding landscape is a mix of woodlands, riverine plain and upland plateaus.

  • Legend: The lake is associated with the long-standing local legend of a serpentine creature often called the Lagarfljótsormurinn; the legend remains part of regional folklore and tourist interpretation.

What to See #

  • Hallormsstaðaskógur: Lies along the western shore of the lake and is Iceland's largest forest, offering walking trails, picnic areas and viewpoints over the water.
  • Hengifoss: A tall waterfall on a tributary of the Lagarfljót river, reached by a short drive from the lake and a popular hiking objective in the area.
