Lagarfljót (often called Lögurinn) is a long, narrow freshwater body in East Iceland sitting in the valley of the Lagarfljót river. It is a prominent landscape feature of the East Fjords region and a focus for nearby outdoor recreation.
Shoreline highlights include forested areas and viewpoints that look down the length of the lake, and local hiking routes that visit nearby waterfalls and woodland. The lake is also known in Iceland for the folkloric creature the Lagarfljótsormurinn, a lake monster said to live in its depths.
The lake and valley formed through glacial and fluvial processes; settlements and farms developed along its shores and the area has long been used for fishing and timber from adjacent woods. Modern tourism centres on walking, birdwatching and exploring the nearby waterfalls and forests.
Lagarfljót sits in East Iceland near the service town of Egilsstaðir and stretches along the lowland valley before the river continues to the coast. The surrounding landscape is a mix of woodlands, riverine plain and upland plateaus.

What to See #
- Hallormsstaðaskógur: Lies along the western shore of the lake and is Iceland's largest forest, offering walking trails, picnic areas and viewpoints over the water.
- Hengifoss: A tall waterfall on a tributary of the Lagarfljót river, reached by a short drive from the lake and a popular hiking objective in the area.
How to Get to Lagarfljót #
Lagarfljót is the long lake/river complex in East Iceland near Egilsstaðir. It is immediately accessible from Egilsstaðir via the Ring Road (Route 1) - you can reach the lakeshore within minutes by car from Egilsstaðir town centre or by stopping at marked viewpoints along Route 1. From Reykjavík expect a long drive of roughly 650 km around the Ring Road (several hours over multiple days is typical); Egilsstaðir is the nearest hub for services and local access.
Tips for Visiting Lagarfljót #
- Plan to visit around sunrise or late afternoon for the best light and calmer water - those times also increase chances of spotting local birdlife and enjoying reflections on the lake.
- View the lake from the roadside viewpoints and bridges near the main access roads (the lake is best experienced from the ring road that runs along it) rather than trying to reach remote shores; these spots give good photo angles and are easy to park at.
- Combine a visit with nearby attractions in East Iceland (base yourself near Egilsstaðir) to avoid a rushed stop; visiting early or late in the day helps avoid tour-bus clusters.
