Lacock Abbey
Museum Medieval abbey in Wiltshire, historic monastic site
Lacock Abbey in Wiltshire combines a medieval abbey cloister with later manor rooms; National Trust care opens it to visitors. Tourists come for monastic architecture, photography (Harry Potter filmed here) and the adjacent village.
Lacock Abbey is a former Augustinian nunnery and later country house in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire, England, originally founded in 1232. The complex combines medieval ecclesiastical architecture with later domestic adaptations.
The site retains medieval cloisters, a refectory and a distinctive gatehouse and west range that illustrate its monastic origins and subsequent conversion to a private residence. The house and former abbey buildings are open to the public under the care of the National Trust.
In the 19th century the house was the home of William Henry Fox Talbot, who carried out some of the earliest photographic experiments there and produced early photographic negatives in the 1830s. The property has been preserved with interpretive displays about its architecture and Talbot’s work.
