Lac Nipissing

Lake Nipissing is a large freshwater lake in Ontario, Canada, lying between the Kapuskasing and French River watersheds and forming a significant regional water body. It is one of the larger inland lakes in Ontario and supports towns and shoreline communities along its edge.

The lake offers extensive shoreline recreation - boating, island hopping, and sport fishing are common pursuits, with anglers targeting species such as walleye and northern pike. Numerous islands and bays create sheltered waterways used by cottage owners and recreational boaters.

Indigenous peoples used the lake and its waterways for travel and subsistence long before European arrival; during the fur trade and later settlement periods the lake and its rivers functioned as transport routes and local economic resources. Towns and rail links developed on the lake’s shores in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Geographically the lake sits in eastern Ontario, with the city of North Bay on its northeastern shore; the French River carries its outflow to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron. The lake forms part of the transition between Ontario’s Canadian Shield and more settled agricultural lands.
