Lake Large Ontario lake north of Lake Superior

Lac Nipigon is a large lake in northwestern Ontario, Canada, lying north of Lake Superior and within the Great Lakes watershed. It is notable for its extensive shoreline, numerous islands and role as the headwaters of the Nipigon River.
The lake supports recreational activities such as fishing, boating and wilderness tourism and is valued for its freshwater fisheries and forested surroundings. There are scattered communities and lodges along the shore but much of the shoreline remains remote and forested.
The lake and its shoreline lie within traditional territories of Indigenous peoples and have long been used for fishing and travel; European fur-trade routes later used the Nipigon corridor to access the Great Lakes. Modern access is by road from northern Ontario centres and by watercraft from Lake Superior via the Nipigon River when conditions permit.
Lac Nipigon is located north of Lake Superior in Ontario; the nearest major city on the Great Lakes is Thunder Bay to the southwest, with road connections and services serving the broader region.
- Size and drainage: Covers several thousand square kilometres and is the largest lake entirely within the province of Ontario; it drains to Lake Superior via the Nipigon River.
- Recreation: Popular for sport fishing and boating, the lake has numerous islands and an irregular shoreline that create sheltered bays and fishing spots.

The town of Nipigon and several other small communities on the Trans‑Canada provide road access points and parking for lake access; Ontario Northland and other regional carriers also serve Nipigon by bus.
Tips for Visiting Lac Nipigon #
- Use local outfitters based in the nearby towns (for example Nipigon) to access remote lodges, guided fishing trips or floatplane drops - much of Lac Nipigon's shoreline is only reachable by boat or plane and is easiest with a local operator.
- Plan trips in late spring through early autumn for open-water navigation and fishing season; outside those months the lake is subject to ice and limited services.
- Explore beyond the southern bays: many day visitors stay near the main highway access, while paddlers and anglers who head to the lake's quieter northern and eastern arms find far fewer people and better wildlife viewing.
