About Lac des Bois

“Lac des Bois” is the French name used historically for the large transboundary lake in the Lake of the Woods region of northwestern Ontario and neighbouring jurisdictions. The name refers to a substantial inland lake system characterised by many islands and irregular shoreline.

The lake system is used for fishing, boating and seasonal recreation, with shorelines that include mixed forest and wetlands. Water access and island landings are common features of recreational use.

The basin formed through glacial and post-glacial processes and has been a travel and resource area for Indigenous peoples and later fur-trade and settlement routes. Modern management covers fisheries, recreation and cross-border water issues.

The lake lies in northwestern Ontario near the border with Manitoba and the U.S. state of Minnesota, occupying a broad, low-lying landscape with numerous islands and sheltered bays.
