Lac de Guiers

Lac de Guiers is a freshwater lake in northern Senegal’s Saint-Louis region that forms part of the lower Senegal River basin. It functions as an important water resource for irrigation, fisheries and local livelihoods.

Shallow fringes, reedbeds and open water create habitats used by local fishers and waterbirds; visitors may encounter fishing activity and agricultural infrastructure along the shores. The town of Richard Toll lies on the lake’s eastern shore and serves as the main local centre for services and access.

The lake has long been integrated into regional water management and agriculture, with modern irrigation schemes and transport links developed in the 20th century to use the lake for crop production and freshwater supply.

Situated inland in northern Senegal, the lake lies south of the Senegal River and west of the town of Saint-Louis, within the Saint-Louis administrative region and accessible by road from regional towns.
