Labraunda
Archaeological Site Ancient Carian sanctuary and ruins in Muğla
Labraunda preserves a Hellenistic sanctuary complex in Muğla Province with terraces, a temple of Zeus Labraundos and rock-cut tombs; archaeologists and walkers explore the ruins and surrounding Carian landscape.
Labraunda is an ancient Carian sanctuary complex in Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, known for its multi-terraced sanctuary dedicated to a local form of Zeus and for substantial Hellenistic and Roman remains.
Ruined monumental architecture and exposed terraces are the main attractions - visitors see a large temple platform, a monumental gateway and processional way, extensive terrace walls and the remains of a palace and service buildings. The complex occupies a series of levelled platforms cut into the bedrock and set in a wooded mountain landscape.
Excavation and rebuilding at the site span the Archaic period into the Roman era, with major development under local dynasts in the 4th century BCE who enlarged and ornamented the sanctuary. Use continued into Roman times when additional buildings and repairs were made.
The site sits on a high plateau in inland Caria, in Muğla Province of southwestern Anatolia; it is reached by local roads from nearby towns and is set among forested hills above the surrounding plain.
- Chronology: The site preserves architectural phases from the Archaic through Roman periods, with visible Hecatomnid-era rebuilding and large terracing works.
- Viewing point: Access involves a climb to a high, forested plateau; the best views of the excavated terraces and gateways are from the southern slope above the sanctuary.
What to See #
- Sanctuary plateau: Ruins concentrated on a terraced plateau include remains of a large sanctuary complex, a monumental gateway and processional way, and domestic and administrative buildings dating to the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
- Temple of Zeus Labraundos: A principal temple dedicated to a local form of Zeus dominates the central terrace and was rebuilt in several phases from the Archaic into the Hellenistic period.
- Hellenistic palace: A palace complex and related structures attributed to Hecatomnid-period development show the site's role as both a religious center and a regional administrative seat in the 4th century BCE and later.
