La Seu Vella

La Seu Vella is the old cathedral complex of Lleida in Catalonia, Spain, occupying a prominent hill above the city. It is a medieval cathedral-fortress noted for its blend of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The site includes the cathedral nave and choir, a large cloister with sculpted capitals and arcaded walkways, and a bell tower that provides expansive views over Lleida and the River Segre. The hilltop complex is one of the most visible historic landmarks in the city and is visited for architecture and city views.

Construction of the complex began in the medieval period as Lleida’s main cathedral; over time Gothic elements were added to an earlier Romanesque core. In the 18th century the site was adapted for military use, which changed access and interior arrangements, and later conservation restored much of its medieval fabric.

La Seu Vella sits on a hill immediately north of Lleida’s modern centre, overlooking the River Segre in inland Catalonia. The city of Lleida is the nearest urban centre.
