La Mezquita

La Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba is a major historic building in Córdoba, Andalusia, originally constructed as a mosque and later converted into a cathedral. Its core fabric dates to the 8th and 9th centuries and it is renowned for its hypostyle hall of columns and double arches.

Visitors typically see the forest of columns and red-and-white arches that define the former mosque’s prayer hall, the ornate mihrab, and the later inserted Renaissance cathedral nave and transept occupying the building’s centre. The contrast between Islamic and Christian architectural elements is a defining feature.

The mosque’s initial construction began under the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba in 785 and it underwent major expansions in subsequent centuries; following the Christian Reconquest the building was adapted for cathedral use in 1236 and later altered with Renaissance and Baroque additions. The site remains a functioning cathedral and a major cultural monument.

La Mezquita sits in the historic centre of Córdoba on the Guadalquivir’s plain and is within walking distance of other historic streets and monuments in the old city.
