La Fortaleza and the San Juan National Historic Site are a ensemble of Spanish colonial military and administrative structures in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, built to defend the harbour and govern the island from the 16th century onward.
The property includes La Fortaleza, the governor’s residence, extensive city walls and two major forts - Castillo San Felipe del Morro at the harbour entrance and Castillo San Cristóbal covering landward approaches. Walkable ramparts, bastions and batteries offer panoramic views over San Juan Bay and the Atlantic coast and connect the major defensive installations.
Spanish colonial authorities began constructing fortifications in the 16th century in response to maritime threats; the system was developed and expanded over successive centuries to protect the strategic port. La Fortaleza served as the administrative residence from the colonial period and continues to have official functions.
The complex is located in Old San Juan on a small islet at the entrance to San Juan Bay, within the municipality of San Juan on the north coast of Puerto Rico.
