La Fortaleza
Palace Spanish colonial governor's fortress and residence in San Juan
La Fortaleza occupies Old San Juan as the governor’s 16th‑century fortified residence; guided visits show historic rooms and ramparts with views over the bay and the city’s colonial streets.
La Fortaleza, also known as the Palace of Santa Catalina, is the official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico located in Old San Juan. Construction began in the 16th century as a defensive fortress and it is one of the oldest executive residences still in use in the Americas.
The complex contains ceremonial and residential rooms, courtyards and bastions that illustrate colonial military architecture and administrative history. Its exterior and public-facing spaces are commonly visited on walking tours of Old San Juan alongside nearby forts and historic streets.
Construction of the fortress-palace began in the early 16th century to protect San Juan Bay and it was altered across the colonial period to serve both defensive and residential functions. It has served as the governor’s residence for centuries and was included with the San Juan fortifications on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
La Fortaleza sits in the historic core of Old San Juan on the islet that encloses San Juan Bay, immediately inland from the entrance to the harbor and within walking distance of the larger coastal forts and promenades.
- UNESCO World Heritage: Inscribed together with the San Juan National Historic Site on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
- Continuous governmental use: Often cited as the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas, serving as the residence of Puerto Rico's governor.
