La Coupole
Fort WWII underground bunker museum about V-weapons
WWII-era bunker complex near Wizernes converted into a museum about V‑2 rockets and wartime history; attracts history visitors for underground galleries, exhibitions and guided tours.
La Coupole is a Second World War German-built bunker complex near Wizernes in the Pas-de-Calais region of northern France, constructed in 1943-44 as part of the Nazi V-weapons programme.
The site presents large-scale wartime engineering and exhibition spaces inside and beneath a reinforced concrete structure, with displays on the V-1 and V-2 programmes, forced labour used in construction, and Allied bombing campaigns. Visitors generally follow adapted routes through the underground galleries and chambers where exhibitions, audiovisuals and displays explain the site’s intended military function and its wartime history.
Built by German military engineering organizations during 1943-44 to serve as an assembly, storage and launch support complex for V-weapons, the facility was heavily targeted by Allied bombing and never operated as a permanent launch site. After the war the structure survived and in later decades was converted into a museum and interpretation centre focused on the site’s role in the V-weapons programme and its broader historical context.
La Coupole sits near the village of Wizernes in Pas-de-Calais, close to Saint-Omer in northern France, on agricultural lowland not far from the English Channel coastline.
