La Boca is a historic port neighborhood in the southeast of Buenos Aires, Argentina, known for its colorful houses, immigrant heritage and strong football culture. It developed as a working-class district populated largely by Italian immigrants and is a prominent cultural and tourist area of the city.
The pedestrian walkway known as Caminito features brightly painted corrugated-iron facades, street artists and tango performances, while nearby cultural venues display Argentine art. The area also contains the famous Boca Juniors stadium, La Bombonera, which is a major draw for football fans and often hosts lively match-day atmospheres.
The neighborhood grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with waves of European immigration and development around the port and shipyards. Over time parts of La Boca became a magnet for artists and tourists while retaining active local communities and small-scale port activity.
La Boca sits on the Riachuelo riverbank about two to three kilometres southeast of Buenos Aires’s main civic centre, clustered around the old port and riverfront piers.
- Best time to visit: The neighborhood is best experienced by day when museums, street performers and local businesses are open; it remains a working port area with some narrow streets off the main tourist route.

How to Get to La Boca #
La Boca is a neighborhood on the southeastern edge of central Buenos Aires, with the colorful Caminito area near the old port. From Plaza de Mayo/central Buenos Aires it is about 3 km southeast - a 10-20 minute taxi ride (shorter by car off‑peak) or a 20-30 minute walk along the waterfront. Regular city buses (colectivos) also serve the area from downtown; routes vary by origin, so many visitors prefer a taxi from Retiro or Plaza de Mayo.
Once you arrive at Caminito or the portfront, La Boca is compact and easily explored on foot.
Tips for Visiting La Boca #
- Start at Caminito in daylight - the pedestrian strip is the heart of La Boca's color and tango performances and is safest and most lively during daytime hours.
- Combine a visit to Caminito with a guided tour or a pre-booked tour of La Bombonera (Boca Juniors stadium) if you want the football experience; stadium tours have limited capacity and sell out on match days.
- Avoid wandering off the main tourist streets after dark - stick to the well-traveled areas around Caminito and the waterfront, keep belongings secure, and use registered taxis to and from the neighborhood.
