The Kyushu National Museum is a national museum located in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, opened in 2005. It is one of Japan’s national museums and emphasizes the history and cultural exchanges of Kyushu and East Asia.
Permanent galleries present archaeological material, crafts and historical objects illustrating cultural links between Kyushu, mainland Japan and the Asian continent; exhibition space is arranged across multiple halls. The museum also runs rotating temporary exhibitions and public programs for families and schools, and provides English signage for major displays.
The museum was established to fill a regional role in Japan’s national museum system and to highlight Kyushu’s historical position as a gateway for cultural exchange. Its modern building and galleries were developed in the early 2000s and opened to the public in 2005.
The museum sits in Dazaifu, adjacent to the historic Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine complex and served by regional transport links from Fukuoka city, about 16 kilometres to the north.

Kyushu National Museum is in Dazaifu, roughly 30 minutes from Fukuoka by train. From Fukuoka’s Tenjin or Hakata stations, take the Nishitetsu Tenjin Ōmuta Line to Nishitetsu Futsukaichi and transfer to the Dazaifu Line to Dazaifu Station; the museum is a 10-15 minute walk from the station, or a short bus.
