The Kyrgyz Ala-Too (also spelled Ala-Too or Kyrgyz Alatau) is a mountain range of the northern Tien Shan that runs across northern Kyrgyzstan and forms a prominent barrier above the capital region. The range contains alpine valleys, rocky ridges and glaciated peaks.

Popular uses include day hiking, alpine climbing and mountain tourism on the range’s northern flanks; the range contains several national and regional parks used for recreation and mountaineering. Snow-fed rivers and steep valleys cut into the range, producing accessible trails near urban centres.

Historically the range has formed a natural frontier and resource area for local populations; alpine pastures and seasonal use have long been important. In the Soviet and post-Soviet periods the area became a focus for organised mountain recreation and conservation.

Geographically the Kyrgyz Ala-Too runs roughly east-west north of the main Tien Shan massifs, overlooking the Chuy Valley and the city of Bishkek in the north and descending towards interior basins to the south. The range is accessible from Bishkek and other regional towns.

  • Proximity to Bishkek: The range forms the northern margin of the Tien Shan and rises above the Chuy Valley and the Kyrgyz capital, making it a prominent backdrop to Bishkek.

What to See #

  • Ala-Archa National Park: Ala-Archa National Park - a popular recreational area on the range's northern slopes, about 40 kilometres south of Bishkek, offering hiking, climbing and day visits.
