Kyoto Tower is an observation tower in central Kyoto, Japan, standing 131 meters tall and opened in 1964. It functions as a modern landmark directly adjacent to Kyoto Station.
An enclosed observation deck at about 100 meters provides panoramic, 360-degree views over the station area, the city center and the surrounding mountain ranges; visibility varies with weather but on clear days many of Kyoto’s major temple areas are visible. The tower’s elevator carries visitors quickly to the deck and back.
The low-rise building at the tower base contains shops, restaurants and the Kyoto Tower Hotel, making the site a combined visitor facility and transport-side landmark. The tower was completed in the mid-20th century as a postwar urban landmark and remains a common short-visit destination for tourists and commuters.
