Kyoto Imperial Palace is the former ruling palace of the Emperor of Japan, located in central Kyoto within the protected grounds of Kyoto Gyoen (Imperial Park). The site served as the primary imperial residence until the capital and court moved to Tokyo in 1869.
Visitors can see the palace buildings and formal gardens which include ceremonial halls, gates and courtyards used by the imperial household. The present buildings are the result of repeated reconstructions over centuries following fires; the layout preserves traditional court architecture and ceremonial spaces.
The palace lies in the centre of Kyoto city and is surrounded by Kyoto Gyoen, a broad public park. It is within walking distance of major central Kyoto landmarks such as the Kitano area to the northwest and the commercial downtown to the south.

How to Get to Kyoto Imperial Palace #
The palace is a 10-15 minute walk from Imadegawa Station (Karasuma Line) or a 15-20 minute walk from Kyoto Station via bus or taxi. Buses 9, 50 and others stop near Kyoto Gyoen; enter via the main park gates and follow signs to the palace. Reserve guided tours online with the Imperial Household Agency.
