Kyoto Imperial Palace is the former ruling palace of the Emperor of Japan, located in central Kyoto within the protected grounds of Kyoto Gyoen (Imperial Park). The site served as the primary imperial residence until the capital and court moved to Tokyo in 1869.

Visitors can see the palace buildings and formal gardens which include ceremonial halls, gates and courtyards used by the imperial household. The present buildings are the result of repeated reconstructions over centuries following fires; the layout preserves traditional court architecture and ceremonial spaces.

The palace lies in the centre of Kyoto city and is surrounded by Kyoto Gyoen, a broad public park. It is within walking distance of major central Kyoto landmarks such as the Kitano area to the northwest and the commercial downtown to the south.

  • Former imperial residence: The palace served as the residence of Japan's Imperial Court until 1869, after which the capital moved to Tokyo; the site is preserved and open to the public within Kyoto Gyoen.
