Monastery Large Volga reservoir created by damming the river
A large reservoir on the Volga River (also called the Samara Reservoir), created by mid‑20th‑century damming and spanning Samara Oblast. Visitors use the lake for boating, fishing, and lakeside recreation along sandy banks and port towns.
The Kuybyshev Reservoir, also called the Samara Reservoir, is a large artificial reservoir on the Volga River in Russia’s Samara Oblast. It was created in the 1950s when hydroelectric works and a dam impounded the Volga and Kama rivers.
The reservoir extends across a broad basin and inundated river valleys and lowlands to form a very large surface-water body used for hydroelectric power, navigation and regional water management. It remains one of the largest reservoirs in Europe by surface area.
Construction of the dam and filling of the reservoir occurred during the Soviet period in the mid-20th century as part of large-scale river regulation and power-generation projects. The impoundment reshaped local transport, economy and riverine ecosystems.
The reservoir spans parts of Samara Oblast and adjacent regions, lying along the middle Volga and stretching between several regional cities and towns. It connects to navigation routes on the Volga and to tributary river valleys.
- Scale and origin: Formed in the mid-20th century by damming the Volga and Kama rivers, it is one of the largest reservoirs in Europe by surface area at roughly 6,450 square kilometres.
