Küstendorf
Museum Ethno-village and film festival site created by Kusturica
Film-and-art village built by director Emir Kusturica at Mokra Gora, featuring wooden houses, cobbled lanes and cultural events. Visitors attend the Küstendorf Film and Music Festival and ride the vintage Šargan Eight railway nearby.
Küstendorf, locally known as Drvengrad, is a wooden ”ethno-village” and cultural complex in western Serbia created by film director Emir Kusturica in the early 21st century. The site was built as a film set and artistic community and now operates as a tourist destination with guesthouses, a cinema and exhibition spaces.
The compact village replicates traditional wooden architecture and contains streets, public squares, a cinema and hospitality facilities tailored to cultural events and visitors. It serves as a venue for film screenings, concerts and the director’s annual festival, and is used for occasional film shoots and cultural programmes.
Küstendorf sits on a wooded hillside near the village of Mokra Gora and the Šargan Eight heritage railway in western Serbia’s Zlatibor region. The location is a short drive from the Mokra Gora tourist area and linked to mountain hiking and scenic railway excursions.
- Festival: Hosts an annual film and music festival founded by Emir Kusturica in the late 2000s, attracting filmmakers and musicians to screenings and concerts in the village.
What to See #
- Drvengrad / Küstendorf village: A purpose-built wooden village created by film director Emir Kusturica in the early 2000s that functions as a cultural centre with cafes, guesthouses and performance spaces. It was constructed for film projects and as a permanent artistic settlement.
- Connection to Šargan Eight railway: Located near the Šargan Eight heritage railway and the mountain village of Mokra Gora, the site is closely linked to the narrow-gauge railway tourist attraction and scenic mountain routes.
How to Get to Küstendorf #
Küštendorf (Drvengrad/Mećavnik) is in the Mokra Gora area of western Serbia. By car from Belgrade follow the A2/E763 west toward Užice (roughly 210-230 km), then take the regional road south toward Mokra Gora/Drvengrad (another ~30-40 km). There are regular regional buses from Užice to Mokra Gora.
You can also reach the village via the Šargan Eight heritage railway (the narrow‑gauge tourist train that serves Mokra Gora/Šargan stations); from the Mokra Gora/Šargan train stop the settlement is a short walk or a few minutes by local taxi/shuttle (around 10-20 minutes on foot depending on the stop).
Tips for Visiting Küstendorf #
- Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid the day-trip crowds from Zlatibor and get the best light for photos of the wooden architecture in Drvengrad (Küstendorf).
- Combine your visit with a ride on the Šargan Eight heritage railway out of Mokra Gora - board at the Mokra Gora station and check the train timetable in advance to coordinate both experiences.
- Use the main entrance/parking area at Mokra Gora rather than trying to approach through forest tracks; once inside, walk the short paths up behind the central square to reach viewpoints, the wooden church and the small cultural venues that many day visitors skip.
Best Time to Visit Küstendorf #
Go in summer for easy outdoor access and hiking, or in January if you want to coincide with the Küstendorf festival.
