Kuressaare Castle

Kuressaare Castle is a medieval episcopal fortress on the island of Saaremaa in western Estonia, with origins in the 14th century. It is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Baltic region and now functions as a museum complex.

The castle’s defensive walls, inner courtyard and towers are open to visitors and the site includes exhibition spaces presenting regional archaeology, history and culture. The battlements and towers provide accessible viewpoints over the town of Kuressaare and the surrounding harbour.

Built as a stronghold and residence for the bishops of the region during the medieval period, the fortress passed through various rulers over centuries including periods of Swedish and Russian control before 20th-century restoration. Conservation and museum development in the 20th and 21st centuries have maintained the castle’s structural integrity and public uses.

The castle stands in the town of Kuressaare on the eastern shore of Saaremaa island in the Baltic Sea, adjacent to the town harbour. It is the principal historic site in Kuressaare and the focal point of the island’s historic centre, within ferry and road distance of mainland Estonia.
