Kuray Mountains
Mountains Remote Altai mountain range with alpine landscapes
The Kuray Mountains in the Altai Republic form a highland spine with alpine meadows and river valleys; visitors come for trekking, horsepacking and access to glacial lakes.
The Kuray Mountains are a mountain range in the Altai Republic of Russia and form part of the greater Altai mountain system in southern Siberia. They are one of several subranges that make up the regional highland landscape.
The range consists of alpine ridges and valleys typical of the Altai region and is noted locally for its remote, high-elevation terrain. The area is sparsely populated and visited mainly by people travelling for mountaineering, trekking and nature study.
The mountains are the product of the same mountain-building processes that created the Altai system; they do not represent a single constructed monument and have no founding date. Over time the range has been used seasonally by local pastoralists and more recently by outdoor recreationists.
Geographically the Kuray Mountains lie within the Altai Republic in southern Siberia. They sit inland from Russia’s borders with Mongolia and Kazakhstan and are part of a larger network of ranges in the Altai region.

- What most visitors miss: the Kuray Basin's expansive steppe panoramas and traditional Altai settlements-build extra time into your itinerary to explore the basin and nearby cultural sites rather than just passing through.
