Kunlun Mountains

Mountains Extensive mountain range in western China, source of rivers

One of China’s major western ranges on the Tibetan Plateau, the Kunlun hosts high, partly glaciated peaks and remote plateaus. It draws mountaineers, scientists and adventurous overland travelers.

Main image

The Kunlun Mountains are one of Asia’s major mountain chains, running along the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau in western China. The range extends for several thousand kilometres and forms a significant geographic and climatic boundary.

The mountains include high alpine terrain, glaciers in their higher sectors and long arid foothills to the north. They are a notable source region for several inland river systems and have long been known in Chinese geography and mythology.

Historically the Kunlun range appears in Chinese literature and cartography and has been traversed intermittently by explorers, traders and scientific teams. Modern interest focuses on geology, glaciology and high-altitude ecosystems.

The range spans western Chinese provinces and autonomous regions, including sections in Xinjiang and Qinghai and adjacent to the Tibetan Plateau, and lies well inland from China’s eastern population centres.

  • Scale: The range stretches for several thousand kilometres across western China and forms a major structural boundary of the Tibetan Plateau.
  • Access and terrain: High altitude, remote terrain and extensive glaciation in places make many parts accessible only to experienced mountaineers and scientific teams.

What to See #

  • Northern Kunlun: The northern slopes and foothills that descend into the Tarim Basin and Xinjiang arid regions, characterised by high, dry ranges and desert margins.
  • Southern Kunlun: The section bordering the Tibetan Plateau, with high elevations, glaciers and alpine terrain that feed plateau river systems.
