Kunashir

Kunashir is a volcanic island at the southern end of the Kuril chain, administered as part of Sakhalin Oblast in the Russian Federation and claimed by Japan. The island’s landscape is dominated by volcanic mountains, steep coasts and geothermal features.

Visitors and researchers are drawn to its volcanic topography, hot springs and coastal wildlife, though access is limited and subject to regional transport arrangements. The island forms part of a string of islands that separate the Sea of Okhotsk from the Pacific and has a mix of temperate forest and alpine vegetation.

The island has a complex modern history tied to Russo-Japanese relations and post-World War II border arrangements; fishing and limited settlement have characterised its recent economy. Infrastructure and services are concentrated in a few settlements along protected bays.

Geographically it lies immediately northeast of Hokkaido across the Nemuro Strait and south of the rest of the Kurils; the nearest major Japanese island is Hokkaido.
