Kumisi Lake is a water body on the Tbilisi plain in eastern Georgia, located southeast of the capital. It functions as a local resource for fishing and informal recreation for nearby villages.
The lake attracts anglers and some birdlife, and is accessed by local roads from surrounding settlements. It serves local rather than national-scale tourism and is part of the lowland landscape southeast of Tbilisi.

How to Get to Kumisi Lake #
Kumisi Lake lies just south of Tbilisi - roughly 15 km from central Tbilisi (Tbilisi city center). By car or taxi it is typically a 20-30 minute drive along local roads from central Tbilisi; there is no single major highway name I can confidently state for the final approach. Public transport to the immediate lakeshore is limited, so a taxi or private car from Tbilisi is the usual way to reach the site.
Tips for Visiting Kumisi Lake #
- Visit at dawn when waterfowl and other birds are most active - early light also gives the best reflections for photography and the calmest water for small-boat fishing.
- Access the lake from the village side closest to Tbilisi (the western/eastern approaches used by locals) rather than trying to approach from the main highway; local tracks lead to quieter reedbeds and informal vantage points.
- Spend time along the reed margins and shallow bays where most visitors don't linger; these areas concentrate birds and fish and make for better close-up wildlife observation than the more exposed open shore.
Best Time to Visit Kumisi Lake #
Best visited in summer for warm, dry weather and water activities, with pleasant shoulder seasons for walking and wildlife viewing.
