Kume Island (Kumejima) is an inhabited island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, known for its beaches, coral reefs and distinct coastal geology.

The island is noted for a hexagonal basalt pavement called Tatami-ishi, a long sandbar called Hatenohama, and a number of beaches and coastal reefs used for swimming and diving. Inland there are low hills, agricultural areas and historical sites such as castle ruins that overlook the shore.

Kumejima developed as a local center in the Ryukyu island chain and has maintained traditional crafts and local festivals while supporting tourism based on its marine and geological attractions.

Kume Island lies to the west of Okinawa Island in the East China Sea and is served by Kumejima Airport and ferry links to Naha, making it reachable by a short domestic flight or boat ride.

  • Access options: An airport on the island operates flights to Naha on Okinawa main island and there are also regular ferries from Naha and nearby islands.
  • Diving and snorkeling: Coral reefs around the island support diving and snorkeling; the best visibility is typically in summer and early autumn.

What to See #

  • Tatami-ishi (basalt pavement): A natural pavement of hexagonal basalt columns formed by ancient lava flows and exposed along the coast; a short walk from nearby beaches and a well-known geological feature of the island.
  • Hatenohama sandbar: A long white sandbank and shallow sandbar best reached by boat from Kumejima; popular for day trips, swimming and shell collecting on clear days.
  • Uegusuku Castle ruins: Ruins and earthworks of an old gusuku castle on a hill overlooking the island, offering views over the coast and inland countryside and reflecting local Ryukyuan history.
