Kumbhakarna, also known as Jannu, is a major Himalayan peak in eastern Nepal reaching 7,710 metres in elevation. It is renowned among climbers for steep, technical routes and dramatic faces rather than as a non-technical trekking summit.

The mountain’s steep ice and rock faces present sustained technical challenges that attract elite alpinists rather than general trekking parties. Approaches involve long access treks across high Himalayan terrain and glacier travel.

The peak was first climbed in 1962 by an international expedition. Since that time it has become notable for difficult alpine routes and selective ascents rather than high-traffic mountaineering seasons.

Kumbhakarna sits in the eastern Nepal Himalaya within Koshi Province, surrounded by high ridges and glaciers. The mountain is in a remote, high-altitude environment requiring extended logistical planning to approach and climb.

  • Elevation and difficulty: The mountain reaches 7,710 metres above sea level and is considered a highly technical peak with steep faces and complex ice routes.
  • Best seasons: Climbing is normally attempted in the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons when conditions are most stable.

Tips for Visiting Kumbhakarna Mountain #

  • Visit in the pre-monsoon (April-May) or autumn (late September-November) windows for the clearest views and most stable trekking weather; winter brings heavy snow and summer monsoon often hides the peak.
  • Access is normally arranged via Taplejung (Suketar airstrip) - plan your approach and logistics from Taplejung town and expect multi-day trekking or hiring local porters/guides rather than simple day visits.
  • Allow extra days for acclimatization and obtain the required permits (TIMS and the local conservation-area permit) through Taplejung authorities or your trekking operator before setting off to base-camp approaches.
  • Don't rush the approach: small mountain villages and ridge viewpoints below Kumbhakarna offer excellent sunrise/sunset views that many trekkers skip while focusing only on the higher camps - ask your guide to include a local village viewpoint for photos and cultural contact.

Best Time to Visit Kumbhakarna Mountain #

Best visited in the pre-monsoon (spring) or post-monsoon (autumn) seasons for the clearest conditions and safer access.

Pre-monsoon (Spring)
Mar-May · ~5 to 20°C at lower elevations; much colder above 3,000 m
Clearer skies and warmer days at lower camps make this a primary season for trekking and viewing the peak; snow persists at high altitudes.
Post-monsoon (Autumn)
Sep-Nov · ~5 to 20°C at lower elevations; freezing conditions higher up
Generally stable weather and excellent visibility for mountain views and approaches; nights turn cold as the season progresses.
Monsoon & Winter
Jun-Aug (monsoon) and Dec-Feb (winter) · Monsoon: cool and wet at low elevations; Winter: well below freezing at altitude
Monsoon brings heavy rain and cloud cover that obscures views; winter brings heavy snow and very cold conditions that limit access at higher camps.
