Kul Sharif Mosque
Mosque Kazan Kremlin mosque rebuilt as Tatar cultural symbol
Within the Kazan Kremlin, Kul Sharif Mosque combines recent reconstruction with historic memory; tourists visit for its minarets, interior mosaics and views over the Kazanka and Volga confluence.
The Kul Sharif Mosque is a reconstructed mosque located within the Kazan Kremlin in Tatarstan and is one of the region’s principal Islamic landmarks. It was built in memory of Kul Sharif, a 16th-century imam who died during the 1552 siege of Kazan.
The mosque’s architecture combines traditional Tatar and contemporary elements, with a prominent central prayer hall, multiple minarets and domes that dominate the Kremlin skyline. It houses an exhibition area about the mosque’s history and Islamic culture in Tatarstan; non-Muslim visitors are generally welcome outside prayer times.
The original mosque fell during the Russian conquest of Kazan in 1552; the modern reconstruction took place around the turn of the 21st century as part of broader restoration of the Kremlin ensemble. The Kul Sharif Mosque now serves both as a place of worship and a cultural landmark.
The mosque sits in central Kazan on the banks of the Volga, inside the fortified Kazan Kremlin which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the historic core of the city.
